Monday, October 24, was the start of the National Minority Enterprise Development Week (MED Week). MED Week is an annual weeklong observance led by the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) that honors the achievements of minority business enterprises (MBEs) and individuals from across the country. It was held in conjunction with the National Minority Supplier Development Council’s (NMSDC) annual conference, which “gives forward thinking corporate executives and minority-owned business owners the tools to cope with shifting economic winds”, said Shelia Hill-Morgan, president and CEO of the Chicago Minority Diversity Council. The MBDA Business Center- Atlanta staff knew that we would have an amazing experience at the conference, yet we had no idea of all the wonderful things that would happen while we were there.
1. MED Week was kicked off in the perfect fashion. The U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Penny Pritzker, was the keynote speaker for the Power Breakfast. She stressed the importance of the MBDA continuing to stimulate jobs and create opportunities for progression and prosperity.
2. Summit Container Corporation (now Summit Packaging Solutions), an MBDA Business Center-Atlanta client, won the Minority Manufacturing Firm of the Year. Summit was founded in 1984, and provides custom protective packaging for an array of products. CEO Adam Walker accepted this national award and we were proud, as well as, honored to be there to witness it.
3. SquarePac LTD., came home with the Regional Class 1 Supplier of the Year and MBEs Who Rock awards. SquarePac looks to provide you with superior products and excellent service and are leaders in the area of concept and design for specialized packaging. We are so proud and honored to have you as a client and we continue to look forward to more success.
We also have another great bit of news that happened outside of MED Week. We, the MBDA Business Center-Atlanta, are proud to announce that we were one of four organizations to be awarded the Advanced Manufacturing Project (AMP) by the U.S. Department of Commerce MBDA. This five-year award will continue to give support to MBEs like Summit Container and SquarePac. We are very thankful for this award and look forward to continuing the work of developing a national ecosystem of MBE manufacturers, partners, and stakeholders for our current and future clients.
